The company Lamy not only stands for writing instruments of the highest quality, but also defines a globally recognized brand name. Since 1966, high-quality and unique writing instruments have been produced at the Heidelberg plant under the name Lamy. The production in Germany is beside the special design and the outstanding quality one of the main pillars of the enterprise strategy.

For the Lamy spring production, OTEC has developed an individual process to grind and polish the surfaces of the nibs for a perfect finish.

At the Heidelberg plant alone in 2017, well over nine million nibs were produced, both steel and gold. From the design to the finished spring, everything must be right to make a perfect writing instrument. The surface treatment of the nibs is an important part of the manufacturing process and guarantees not only a high-quality appearance, but also the best functionality. Due to the preceding processes, burrs and grinding marks are created on the nibs. In a multi-stage process, burrs can be removed and the spring polished to a high gloss.

Customized surface treatment for highly polished nibs

Lamy uses the OTEC CF series disc finishing units for surface treatment. In this highly effective vibratory finishing process, the workpieces are placed in rotating media or polishing granules located in an open container.

The rotating plate at the bottom of the container causes the rotation of the media. The gap between the bottom of the container and the container wall can be reduced to zero. Thanks to this unique sliding gap system, even small and filigree workpieces such as the Lamy filling nibs can be reliably ground, deburred and polished. Clamping and bending of the workpieces is prevented.

Disc Finishing units from CF series

In the first process stage of the multi-stage process, the rough grinding of the nibs with ceramic grinding media takes place in a wet process. In this wet processing, a water-compound mixture is continuously added and removed, which rinses the removed dirt particles. This creates a clean and corrosion-free surface on the nibs. In order to remove the remaining grinding marks, fine grinding takes place with plastic grinding media.

In the final step, the nibs are polished to a high gloss using a dry process with the use of walnut granules. Only in this way can they meet the high-quality requirements of the Lamy brand and, in the end, become part of an unmistakable trend product.

Golden Nibs in Lamy production

In addition to the nibs, the disc finishing machine of OTEC also handle lead tips and clips of the writing instruments. The advantages are above all in the speed, reliability and process reliability of the process.

Only the highest quality components and materials guarantee a long service life and trouble-free operation of the machine. These qualities are also appreciated by Lamy.

Perfect surface of the nibs thanks to the OTEC process

The company is enthusiastic about the quality of the disc finishing machine and was able to optimize surface processing in nib production with OTEC vibratory finishing technology. In close cooperation with OTEC, a tailor-made process was developed, which was individually tailored to the requirements of Lamy.

As a reliable partner, OTEC is also available for questions and concerns beyond the purchase. Lamy also sees particularly the reliability and the fast communication ways in the co-operation with OTEC very positively.
